The heraldic animal of the Rostock Zoo

The enclosure for the polar bears is situated in the centre of the historical park tract. It’s the place of a successful long-term polar bear husbandry. Inaugurated in 1959 the polar bear castle is the Zoo’s centrepiece. With its rocks, waterfalls and bathing basin it was one of the biggest and most modern enclosures in Europe for a long time.
Several polar bear generations lived here in Rostock and successfully propagated. Lots of European zoos now are housing polar bears from Rostock. Due to these successes Rostock Zoo keeps the International Stud Book for the polar bear since 20 years.
